What Can Career and Technical Education (CTE) do for me?
BBCC’s Career and Technical Education program allows students in the grades 9-12 to earn college workforce education credits and high school credit at the same time, by taking approved courses, in the familiarity of your own high school or skills center.
Benefits of CTE dual enrollment:
- Advances workforce education goals- Students can get a head start on their workforce education by earning BBCC credits at their local high school or skills center
- College credits-students can simultaneously earn college credits and high school credits while working towards a technical degree or certificate.
- Savings- Earn credit at no personal cost to the student
How to Navigate BBCC dual registration deadlines
The registration process is composed of four steps: Application, Enrollment, withdrawal and Grading.
- Apply to BBCC: To apply to BBCC’s CTE program, please follow the instructions on the BBCC Dual Credit Application Steps worksheet. This first step is a preparatory step that places you into BBCC’s backend system, and makes sure that if you complete the following steps, your grade will placed onto a BBCC transcript. You must complete this step, and all following steps by our dual enrollment deadlines.
- Enroll in your classes: The second step is the most important step, where students decide if they want to take their CTE course for BBCC credit. To enroll in your CTE course for college credit, you and your guardian must provide your instructor with a signed copy of the CTE Consent form by enrollment the deadline, along with confirmation that you wish to enroll. This document can be found in multiple languages under the CTE resources on the side of the webpage. If you miss this deadline, you cannot enroll and earn BBCC credit.
- Withdrawing from a Class: This third step is only taken if you are unhappy with your grade after you’ve applied. Students can inform their instructor that they would like to withdraw from the course before the withdrawal deadline, and instead of their final grade, will receive a ‘W’. W’s do not affect a student’s college GPA, but they can effect how many times a student may re-take a course or how many credits of financial aid they receive.
- Grades submitted: Instructors submit students’ final grades to BBCC and their High school at the same time. Students do not participate in submitting grades. After this deadline, students will be able to see their final grade on a BBCC transcript.
Things to Consider Before Enrolling in CTE
The BBCC Career and Technical Education program is a great way to save money and time along your post-secondary journey, but there are some things to consider as you take this step.
- College Transcripts- College transcripts are permanent. The grade you achieve in your CTE courses will be with you for the rest of your post-secondary career. CTE courses will count towards your college GPA and could possibly affect your ability to transfer to different College institutions or affect employment opportunities that require differing levels of college course completion.
- Financial Aid- All of BBCC’s dual enrollment credits, both completed and attempted, can have an effect on your ability to receive future financial aid. Most state and financial aid will only reimburse a certain number of credits, and credits received from dual enrollment programs can in some cases count towards that number. Credits earned in dual enrollment count towards your GPA as well, and that can also have an impact on financial aid that is contingent upon such things.
- FERPA-Dual credit students enrolled in dual credit programs (CTE Dual Credit, College in the High School, Running Start) are considered regular college students and are protected by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). It is a federal law that protects student information and puts the ownership of a student’s higher education academic records and account information on the student regardless of age. Parents and family members do not have access to students’ grades, class schedules, and other protected information. Student Rights, responsibilities and policies
Being a BBCC CTE student means that you have and are beholden to the same rights and responsibilities as students attending BBCC in any other form. It’s the student's responsibility to be familiar with these expectations and to contribute to a positive and healthy environment for fellow students and faculty.
Grades
CTE teachers must follow the grade point average grading scale for the grade submitted to the college. This does not prevent there from being a separate grade for the high school transcript in the high school grading format. Full year class grades are generated by taking the average of the two term grades and. Classes aren’t available for pass/fail grading for students with 504 plans or IEP high school accommodations for the CTE program.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA
FERPA provides students with certain rights with respect to their education records. These rights, as they pertain to the CTE program, do not permit college staff to disclose or discuss students’ records with anyone, including parents and guardians, other than the student. When inquiring about student records the student must make the inquiry.

Student Accounts/ID Numbers
Once you create a profile account in the CTE Dual Credit SERS system, you will receive a student identification number beginning with a TP in the format of TP#-##-###. From the home page, click on View/Edit Profile to see your username and SERS ID.
You can click on the “I forgot my username” and “I forgot my password” on the SERS Student Sign-In page to get your login information. If this is unsuccessful, college staff can reset your student account via email.
To obtain a ctcLink student ID number, you will need to apply to the college. If you already have an existing BBCC student account and student ID number because you participated in the BBCC College in the High School or Running Start program, you do not need to apply to the college. If you have a ctcLink student ID number because you take classes at another community college and have never applied to BBCC or participated in an BBCC dual credit program, you must apply to BBCC.
